Dr. William Kaplan, DVM has passed away at the age of 86. He was an ISHAM member from the founding and was the recipient of the Lucille Georg Award in 1988 in Barcelona. An obituary can be found here.
The Mycetoma Research Centre (MRC) in Khartoum, Sudan has recently moved to its new premises at Soba University Hospital. MRC was established in 1991 to provide an integrated high quality medical care for Mycetoma patients, superb research and excellent education and teaching in the various aspects of Mycetoma. Imedex has started e-learning activity specifically designed for infectious disease physicians, oncologists, hematologists and other healthcare professionals who have an interest in or who care for patients who are at risk for fungal sepsis. The antifungal susceptibility testing subcommittee of EUCAST (www.eucast.org ) has approved standards for testing of yeast and moulds. In addition, breakpoints for fluconazole and voriconazole have been developed. Standards documents can be FREE downloaded from EUCAST WEB page (Click on Documents submenu) as well as the rationale documents for breakpoints (Click on Clinical Breakpoints and Epidemiological Cutoffs Values submenu).
The Mycology / Parasitology Division of the Robert Koch Institut in Berlin, Germany has a position available for an investigator in the area of pathogenesis.

Institut Pasteur Group Leader Positions
The Institut Pasteur is renewing its international call for candidates wishing to create junior research groups on its Paris, France campus. The call is open to researchers in all disciplines currently covered by the Institut Pasteur (Virology, Immunology, Parasitology, Mycology, Cell Biology, Infectiology, Epidemiology, Microbiology, Structural Biology, Chemistry, Neuroscience, Genomics, Genetics, Developmental Biology and In Silico Biology). The deadline for applications is December 31, 2008. Short-listed candidates will be called for interview in March-April 2009 and decisions will be announced on June 30.
Candidates should have up to 8 years postdoctoral experience. Successful candidates will be appointed as head of a group of 5-6 people for a period of 5 years. The budget (up to 1,350,000€ over 5 years) includes the salary for the group leader (if necessary), a three-year postdoctoral position, a technician, basic laboratory equipment, a major contribution to running costs and essential major equipment, and access to on-campus facilities including state-of-the-art technology platforms.
Candidates should send their formal applications by mail and, as a single pdf file, by E-mail to the Director of Scientific Evaluation, Prof. Alain Israël, at the Institut Pasteur (25, rue du Dr. Roux, 75724 Paris, France; g5@pasteur.fr).
The Application must include the following:

5. The names of 3 scientists from whom letters of recommendation can be sought, together with the names of scientists with a potential conflict of interest from whom evaluations should not be requested.

ISHAM welcomes a new Working Group on Zygomycoses, see here. This is an established WG of the European Confederation of Medical Mycology (ECMM) but has decided also to join ISHAM in view of internationalization. Convener is Dr G. Petrikkos, petrikos@med.uoa.gr or petrikos@hol.gr .
A new version of the Penn State Fusarium-ID (previously http://fusarium.cbio.psu.edu/u) sequence identification database is in progress, and a new update will be up by the end of 2008. In the current version, you can generate a translation elongation factor 1-alpha sequence and BLAST it against the database of 445 sequences from vouchered, publicly available cultures. The new version (http://isolate.fusariumdb.org) will include sequences from more genes and far more isolates, with additional features and downloadable data.
New guidelines for susceptibility testing of fungi are available from the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) and can be purchased at the CLSI website .
An interesting call is opened: Innovative Approaches to Target Identification and Assay Development for Fungal Diagnosis (R21/R33), see here . This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), is issued by the NIAID, National Institutes of Health, and solicits applications to foster collaborative efforts between the mycology research community and the innovative technology sector to develop novel clinical diagnostic targets and subsequent assays for invasive aspergillosis (IA) and other invasive fungal diseases common to immunocompromised or immunosuppressed patients. Ultimately, research sponsored in response to this FOA should lead to the development of a novel diagnostic test(s) for detection of invasive fungal disease(s) that must include invasive aspergillosis. A Medical Mycology course will be offered in Chengdu City, Sichuan province, China from 18-24 March, 2009. The title will be: “Fungus Diseases: Technical, Clinical and Research”.
The course will include lectures on basic mycology, clinical and therapeutic aspects of all the mycoses, given by Medical Mycology authorities from all over China and overseas. In addition to daily lectures a complete wet lab will be presented. This course is designed for physicians, technical and research personnel.
The course will be held on the campus of West China Hospital, Sichuan University. On campus housing and dining facilities are available as well as nearby hotels.

We plan to start a section “Guidelines and Recommendations” on our website very soon. This will also. be used by ISHAM Working Groups to publicize their practical outcomes. But there will be place for many more items of general interest. You may send your contribution to the General Secretary .

On the occasion of the ISHAM congress in Tokyo (click), May 25-29, 2009, a pilot-version of the 3rd edition of the Atlas of Clinical Fungi (click) will be presented. This will be a CD version, in English as well as in Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages. Buyers will later receive a free update of the final 3rd edition, which is expected to appear in 2010.

ISHAM welcomes the Medical and Veterinary section of the All-Russian National Academy of Mycology as an affiliated organization. The Academy has offices and representations in 49 regions of Russia, and total membership of the medical section is 252. Yearly congresses are organized. Major projects of the Medical Section are nation-wide awareness of tinea pedis and onychomycosis (Hotline Project 2001-2002, more than 30000 patients examined), epidemiological surveys and support for the development of PCR primers for Trichophyton and Microsporum species. A new database for identification of Trichoderma including medical species has been launched at www.ISTH.info , the official website of the International Subcommission on Trichoderma and Hypocrea Taxonomy. It contains three online programs for molecular species identification: TrichOKEY, a DNA oligonucleotide BarCode program, which identifies 95% of known Hypocrea/Trichoderma species and distinguishes potentially new species or alleles. And TrichoMARK, a program which trims sequence fragments for a subsequent similarity search that significantly increases the accuracy of the similarity search in TrichoBLAST ;or NCBI BLAST; and TrichoBLAST, a multiloci local alignment each tool against a verified database of Hypocrea/Trichoderma sequences (three phylogenetic loci: tef1, ITS1 and 2 and rpb2.

The British Society for Medical Mycology has set up adistance learning-based course in the theory and practice of medical mycology, by means of DVDs, web-based materials and practical courses. A new journal is launched by the British Medical Journal: “BMJ Case Reports”, see http://casereports.bmj.com/about-bmj-cases . This journal aims to publish a high volume of cases in all disciplines so that healthcare professionals, researchers and others can easily find clinically important information on common and rare conditions. Entering its second year of publication, Current Fungal Infection Reports is one of the Current Reports journals that were originally developed to enable specialists to keep up to date with the expanding volume of information in their field. Themes covered so far include epidemiology, genomics and pathogenesis, pharmacology of new antifungal agents, therapy, diagnosis and much more. Each issue contains a web alert. The editorial team is headed up by Andreas Groll and Carol Kauffman. The journal is published quarterly by the Current Medicine group and is published both in paper and electronic formats. A new Working Group has joined ISHAM: ‘Fungiscope’, aiming at global registration of rare fungal infections. The group plans to interact with other ISHAM WGs with expertise on particular groups of uncommon fungi. Clinicians are invited to deposit their data; this will be sponsored. Routine identifications of uncommon pathogens using GenBank often gives erroneous results, because the quality of depositions may be poor. A large consortium of mycologists wrote a letter to Science, advocating more inter-active correction process of deposited data; see http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/reprint/319/5870/1598.pdf .
